Getting an iPad

Forget all the hype. Forget all the buzz. Forget that it’s the cool “it” gadget that everyone wants. Forget that it’s a sleek, shiny device that looks pretty. What can you do on an Apple iPad? Touting itself as “a magical and revolutionary product”, the iPad is a mobile tablet device with a 9.7-inch touch screen display. It weighs less than two pounds, and its dimensions are 9.56″ x 7.47″. The height and width are about the size of a hardback book. The iPad runs Apple’s iPhone operating system, so the intuitive user interface from the iPhone is replicated in the larger iPad. Models come in various media storage capacities, from 16GB, to 32GB and 64GB. All have Wi-Fi for mobile Internet access, and there are also models with 3G built in for additional high speed mobile access.

As to what you can do with on Apple iPad, you can do everything you can do on an Apple iTouch, with the added benefit of a larger screen! This means you can listen to music, watch videos, surf the Internet, check e-mail, read electronic book files (including PDF files), and even work on productivity files like word processing and spreadsheets.

But this sounds like things you can do on a smartphone or a netbook, you may say. And you would be correct. The basic functionality is similar, but the iPad has vastly superior features, notably the larger screen size that makes the experience much more pleasant and user-friendly. It is certainly easier to type on the iPad than on a small smartphone, and of course, it’s easier to watch videos or read an eBook on the iPad than a smartphone. The netbook is often considered as a close competitor to the iPad, as they offer similar utility, but again, the iPad has a more intuitive user interface, as the touch screen navigation is easier to learn and use than the netbook interface, especially for people who have no background in using personal computers. The netbook, of course, is a better bargain in terms of processing and storage power and cost for the basic functions, but the iPad offers more than just a better user interface and prettier design. The iPad has access to the world of Apple apps.

Apps are applications or programs that are developed exclusively for the iPhone operating system, and to quote an Apple advertisement, think of anything, and “there’s an app for that”. Basically, an app is a program that can be useful, educational, or just plain fun. Apps take advantage of the Apple devices’ beautiful displays, touch screens, motion sensitive interfaces, and mobility to enhance the user experience. You can have an app that automatically detects your location and suggests places of interest to you, or that tells you if your friends are nearby. You can then have an app that lets you play games with those friends. You can have an app that helps you manage your diet or fitness regimen, or help you learn a language. You can have an app that lets you play a musical instrument on the touch screen, or you can play a high-speed car chase game using your device as a steering wheel. What you can do on the iPad is nearly limitless, thanks to apps.
